Heartbreaking

I was walking downtown yesterday and saw those two little girls across the street who were crying and shrieking and looked totally terrified.

The older one was Capucine’s age and her sister was not older than 2 years old. They looked like they were lost, so I crossed the street to go help them.

They started to run up the street and my heart just skipped a beat as I was scared the youngest one would leave the sidewalk, so I ran up to them. There was this lady way ahead of us, about 10 yards away, and I thought she could be their mom, but she was not looking behind her.

They were still crying and the youngest one was screaming  “I want a hug ! I want a hug !”. The way she screamed and the look in her eyes was just heartbreaking.

I asked her if she had lost her mom, and at that point, that lady turned around and said “No, no”.

The whole scene lasted like 3 minutes. All that time the two girls could have left the sidewalk and get hit by a car. Their mother didn’t give a effin’ damn about them.

I walked away and cried.
