do you know of any French programs that offer work (perhaps teaching english!) to Americans? Specifically a young American, about to graduate college with a degree in Art History (minors in French and English)? I’ll do just about anything though.

We celebrated Epiphany yesterday with a “Galette des Rois” (King Cake), a day early because of the moving today.

To follow the tradition, Capucine, as the youngest person of the house, had to sit under the table and name the recipients of the shares. A trinket (la fève) is hidden inside the cake, and the person who gets it becomes the “King”.

With Aliocha’s approval, we cheated a little bit and we gave the share containing the trinket to Capucine. She was very happy to wear her paper crown and she chose Aliocha as her “King” for the day :-)

This photograph was taken in June 1919 in Salonika (Greece), where my ancestors had settled after being expelled from Spain, following the Alhambra decree in 1492.

On the left is my great grandmother Mathilde, and the child next to her is Marcel, my maternal grandpa, who died in 1998, a few months after Aliocha was born. Marcel was 7 on this picture, and emigrated to France when he was 12.

This is the oldest photograph I have of my family and I keep it like a treasure. :-)

I love this idea! Echoage is a start-up that plans kids’ birthday parties to collect gift money instead of presents. Half of the money goes towards one meaningful gift for the child, and the other half goes towards a charity the child chooses.
